Marion Cotillard: Feminism is creating 'separation' in Hollywood

Marion Cotillard doesn't identify as a feminist. In fact, the Academy Award winner believes the very word is harming the film industry.

Hollywood's female actors, directors and writers report consistent sexism, ageism, sexual harassment and exclusion from jobs and accolades.

But in an interview with Porter Magazine, Cotillard, who appears as Lady Macbeth in Justin Kurzel's Macbeth film adaptation, argued that the vocal push to include more women in Hollywood creates an unnecessary separation of genders.

"Filmmaking is not about gender," she said. "You cannot ask a president in a festival like Cannes to have, like, five movies directed by women and five by men. For me, it doesn't create equality; it creates separation. I mean I don't qualify myself as a feminist." Read more...

Volkswagen's Biggest Long Term Problem--Loss Of Competitive Advantage

For years, Volkswagen (OTC:VLKAY) enjoyed a reputation for high performance vehicles -- efficiency, acceleration, and handling. That was a great selling point for the company brand, especially in the green-sensitive US market, and it helped the company become the world's second largest automobile company (in vehicle sales), behind Toyota. The recent emissions scandal revealed that there was a little dirty secret behind this performance. A software which helped the company circumvent emission rules, rather than undergo the necessary engine modifications which would have added to production costs, and possibly compromise performance. Now, Volkswagen has to play by the rules. And its advantage may be compromised. Modifications to the vehicles will add to production costs, and perhaps undermine vehicle performance. Compounding the problem, Volkswagen already lags behind other auto companies in key economic metrics, and most notably its closest competitor, Toyota. See table.

Donald Trump and Carly Fiorina traded jabs Wednesday over their business record with each accusing the other, essentially, of corporate incompetence.

While the two have been engaged in a bitter back-and-forth for weeks now, this exchange was sparked by a question from moderator Jake Tapper

Trump said that Hewlett Packard "is a disaster and continues to be a disaster," referencing the recent announcement that the company will soon shed as many as 30,000 jobs.

Fiorina led HP for six years before she was fired a decade ago by the company’s board of directors. On stage Wednesday, she defended her business record, saying that "when you challenge the status quo…you make enemies." Read more...

Since 1985, Australia's Wonderland theme park was a rite of passage for thousands of kids, who were terrified by its massive rollercoasters and sickened by its fried food on sticks

Childhood died on April 26, 2004, however, when the park shut down due to financial issues. Plans for its revival have been rumoured for years now, but it looks like Wonderland may really be on its way back

The pet project of millionaire property developer Ammar Khan, who once worked at Australia's Wonderland, the theme park has secured funding and is now looking for a venue, the Daily Telegraph reported. Khan called it a "a life-consuming obsession." Read more...

Star babies: Space photo shows beautiful cosmic nursery

A nursery for young stars shines in pink and gold in a newly-released image, taken by a large telescope in the Southern Hemisphere

The Prawn Nebula glows by the light of the hot young stars sheltered within the gas and dust of this star-forming region of the cosmos, about 6,000 light-years from Earth.

The three clusters of young stars in the nebula are only a few million years old — quite young on a cosmic time-scale, the European Southern Observatory said

"The radiation strips electrons from atoms — a process known as ionization — and when they recombine they release energy in the form of light," ESO wrote in a statement. "Each chemical element emits light in characteristic colors, and the large clouds of hydrogen in the nebula are the cause of its rich red glow." Read more...

5 times Obama got real about climate change in Alaska

Barack Obama isn't pulling any punches in Alaska.

The U.S. president spoke powerfully about the potentially severe effects of climate change around the world on Monday during a trip to Alaska, a state that has already seen physical changes as a result of global warming. Its glaciers are receding, erosion is wearing away land from coastal villages, wildfires have burned millions of acres in this year alone.

Arctic temperatures are rising about twice as fast as the global average, Obama said during his speech at the GLACIER Conference in Anchorage. Last year was Alaska’s warmest year on record, just as it was for the rest of the world. Read more...
