For nearly 50 years, Robert Morin worked quietly at the library of the University of New Hampshire (UNH).

He passed away a little over a year ago at the age of 77, and to the surprise of many, Morin left a small fortune to his employer and alma mater - $4 million to be exact.

He amassed the wealth by steadily working as a cataloguer at UNH's Dimond Library starting in the 1960s, according to the Union Leader. When he wasn't working, Morin had a passion for reading and watching films. By never going out, driving an old car and eating frozen dinners, he was able to save millions.  Read more...

Microsoft reported doing over $1 billion of corporate giving, mostly in-kind, for fiscal year 2015. The software giant is making giving a more integral part of its strategy, as I explored here. One current initiative is a drive to encourage more STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) education, a three-year, $75 million program called YouthSpark.

The findings provide an unprecedented look at the torment some lesbian, gay and bisexual youth experience compared to their straight peers. The study also marks the first time the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has asked students about their sexual identity in its regular survey of high school students.

Writer, actor and comedian Aziz Ansari has never shied away from uncomfortable truths.

He has drawn attention to the under-representation of Asian actors in Hollywood and called out sexism in his HBO show, Master of None.

In a moving opinion piece published Friday in the New York Times, Ansari added Donald Trump to his list of targets. In particular, he shared his fears about what many Americans may face, especially those like his Muslim parents, in a country led by Trump.

"Today, with the presidential candidate Donald J. Trump and others like him spewing hate speech, prejudice is reaching new levels," he wrote. "It's visceral, and scary, and it affects how people live, work and pray." Read more...

RANCHOS PALOS VERDES, California - Like the forester planting trees in a decimated timberland, Amazon is now seriously considering expanding its brick and mortar bookstore experiment.

During a lengthy chat with The Verge's Walt Mossberg at the annual Code Conference on Tuesday night, Amazon founder and CEO Jeff Bezos explained that in addition to the bookstore they opened in Seattle, Washington, last year and the one they have announced for San Diego, the company "will probably open some more."

The irony of this decision is not lost on Bezos, who joked that some had suggested they call the shops "Amazon Irony Books." Read more...

The latest Australian horror flick is a bloody scare campaign

You might have had a giggle at a prank on the Internet recently — but just what happens when these stunts take a step too far?

This is the concept of Scare Campaign, by Australian filmmakers Cameron and Colin Cairnes. It follows their feature film debut, 100 Bloody Acres in 2012, which has the dubious honour of being one of the most illegally downloaded movies in Australia at the time.

Scare Campaign is set around a prank TV show, which is desperate for ratings in the face of a new edgy web series that is making them look old-fashioned. It's up to the producers to up the ante, and they've come up with an elaborate stunt that will shock. Only this time, they've gone too far. Read more...

A California adult film production company owned by porn star James Deen has been slapped with nearly $78,000 in proposed fines for numerous health and safety violations — including not requiring performers to use condoms

Cal/OSHA began investigating James Deen Productions, also known as Third Rock Enterprises, following a complaint last December. Upon visiting one of the company's Los Angeles film shoots in January, the state agency found that performers were not required to wear condoms as mandated by Los Angeles County law, the Department of Industrial Relations said in a statement Wednesday Read more...

A rural Tennessee community has rallied together to help find a 2-year-old boy missing for more than a day, with hundreds of volunteers combing the woods where he disappeared late into the night Friday

In the time since the toddler, Noah Chamberlin, disappeared around 1:20 p.m. Thursday afternoon, about 1,000 volunteers and law enforcement members have aided search efforts in the 600-acre wooded area near Pinson, an unincorporated community in western Tennessee.

Noah was reported missing in the woods near his grandparents' house after wandering away from his 4-year-old sister and grandmother, who sat down to talk and lost sight of the boy, authorities said. There is no suspicion of foul play in the toddler's disappearance, nor has any evidence of Noah's presence been found in the woods, The Jackson Sun reported Read more...

Journalists cry foul: El Chapo granted power to edit Sean Penn's profile

Ap_316191524936

Sean Penn's profile of notorious drug kingpin El Chapo was skewered by journalists almost immediately after it published online Saturday evening because Rolling Stone made a deal with the recaptured convict to seek his approval before publication.

Giving subjects that power is frowned upon in the journalism world due to ethical implications. If the subject of a story has the control, that could lead to censorship and the transformation of a journalistic piece into propaganda. The sheer possibility of that mutation, even if doesn't occur, could find a publication with egg on its face. In this case, Rolling Stone notes that El Chapo did not make any changes after reading the story before it published, but that didn't stop critics from chomping at the bit Read more...
