Trek bikes have been used to climb mountains, cross streets and compete in cycling’s grandest event, the Tour de France. The company, founded in 1976 from a small, red barn in Waterloo, Wisconsin, has grown about 70% in a decade to nearly $1 billion in revenue, according to Privco, a private company research outfit. The person steering Trek now is founder’s son John Burke, who spoke with FORBES about keeping the family-owned business on the right path and handing off the handle-bars to the next generation.
