Cartel Land Is A Must-See Mexico Movie

"Cartel Land" is a compelling, important documentary. Matthew Heineman’s film provides access and insights into the inner working of two vigilante movements. It follows the story of Tim “Nailer” Foley and his pack of paranoid freelance border patrollers and delves into the personal life of Dr. Jose Mireles, one of the leaders of the heavily armed vigilante movement that rose up to fight the notorious Caballeros Templarios drug cartel in the southwestern state of Michoacan. “I believe what I am doing is good and what I am standing up against is evil,” says Nailer. In a different scene, Dr. Mireles, a skinny, charismatic man with a bushy grey mustache picks up an assault rifle and turns to the camera. “What would you do wait for them to come for you or get one of these and defend yourself?” he asks. "Cartel Land" combines beautiful cinematography with unparalleled access to hair-raising shootouts, clandestine meth labs, and the intimate details of Dr. Mireles’ life.
