That's why teenage Hanks wrote an extremely polite and earnest letter to George Roy Hill, director of The Sting, asking Hill to help him make it in Hollywood. Hanks was modest; he didn't explain to Hill that America needed an extremely pleasant superstar, but he must have known. He did this for us
